The final exterior concept artwork for the interior film

The Process

My approach to concept artwork previously was to paint directly into Photoshop but for this project I wanted to approach my concept artwork as realistically as possible. Since I was drawing my references from life, and following very specific images and locations, I needed to adapt for the Exterior build I wanted to create a rough 3-D model of this on Blender.

I started this by taking my exterior technical drawings into Blender and creating 3D model for the jharokha (balcony). The jharokha was fairly simple, after modeling I scaled it up and I proceeded to create the façade around this. The jahrokha was placed on the entrance to the palace fort and meant around it there were smaller balconies, facing both sides and angled above a gateway. This was the gateway that lead into the Amer Palace Fort which we don’t see.

What we do see, is the view of the street in Rajasthan known as the ‘Patwon Ki Haveli’ (Mansion of Merchants) and being a real historical location I needed to maintain the authenticity in terms of my lighting color, palette, and textures. After I created the main façade of the balcony, the gateway and the models beside it, I placed it in my view and I added blocks around it that acted as the buildings on the street. This helped me explore different perspectives by placing my camera in the scene to experiment with point of views.

editing world lighting and camera placement

Following this, I textured the model in Sandstone for everything, and I added a little bit of detailing to the buildings in the street which included small platforms, on the little balconies with railings, and a roofing around it all which was textured in old wood that complimented the sandstone. To light the scene I placed point lights around the main façade, which were a warm yellow that drew the viewers eye towards it by casting a glow in that direction since this was meant to be the focal point of the concept art work. For the rest of the street I placed small point lights within the balcony railings of the houses and below the roof to give a sense that people were awake and in their homes but the streets were empty, setting the scene for the murder that would take place and create an atmosphere of anticipation for viewers.

placing ambient lighting in the environment

Since the scene was also set at night, it was a bit tricky, navigating the light source for this. I did eventually figure out that I could simply change the color of my overhead sunlight, to a deep purple that gave the illusion of a night scene. Additionally, I added a picture plane of cloudy sky during the evening to give more depth to the scene and avoid it looking flat. After doing so I placed my camera just behind the opening of a passageway of a home to give a sense that this environment is a character which is harboring deadly secrets within its walls. Once I was satisfied with the outcome on the third day of working on my concept artwork I exported my renders and a quick flythrough animation in the viewport because I was short of time to do a full render of it, having the interior model to get back to and complete my concept artwork in Photoshop.

Before importing it into Photoshop, the last thing left to do was place an image of my interior set behind the façade of the main balcony to give a glimpse of the interior setting that was the bath from the outside. Once I had taken it into Photoshop I began to edit the sky and paint over my clouds so that they blended into the environment better. The second thing that I had done was to photo bash wooden doorways around the balcony railings on the street. I lastly overlaid a ground texture and in the end, this definitely brought my outcome to life.
