The following week was all about research. Neither of us wanted to dive into this without proper reference material for anything in our story which included the interior space and the props or the set decoration that would ultimately have to be modeled in 3D. We created a list on our shared drive file dividing it over twenty elements that we each had to find references to and collectively decide on them before finalizing anything.

I was inspired by the animation style in the animated short 'One Small Step' by Taiko Studios

The animation style though 2D, expressed a lot of depth in the emotions displayed by the use of light and color

I spent the next few days looking for references to my object list that included the props he wore and what was in the hallway and within the basement. Since we had decided on a time period I had to consider this into my research and be careful with it being as close to the 1950s and Portugal. The hallway included references for my side table, wallpaper, door to the basement, door knob, and light switch, which at the time we had considered to be a pull cord instead.

I then found a few references, for the interior space of the basement by looking into what they looked like furnished and unfurnished which considerably changed its atmosphere and since we wanted it to be ‘spooky’ and not scary it had to feel a bit isolated and abandoned from the rest of the home that would be colourful and vibrant. I collected reference for the stairwell from different viewpoints, the handrail, which during the 1950s would have been in metal but we made an aesthetic decision to keep it in wood.

The walls of the basement in that time period were prone to water leakage because they were laid in dry stone and placed without the use of mortar that gave it this vintage out-of place feel. For the floor, which was a general feature, we kept it concrete. The props inside were few and basic that included a shelf, cardboard boxes and a furnace from that time period we added in later.

The main props included a Colander that I happened to find a good vintage reference for that looked like the helmet worn by a knight. The baking tray was rather simple since the design has changed little since then and neither has a wooden spoon. For the cereal bowl and small spoon I found colourful references that would compliment the kitchen. The toys included the soccer ball and the star of the show- a small dinosaur plush. The dinosaur toy had to look friendly and not menacing, which is why I went with this reference of a toy made in 1959 with its jaws wide open and soft rounded edges, that fit well with our shadow monster.

Besides research into animation styles and closely observing reference material, I made a few rough sketches of the three quarter view of the basement to get a rough understanding of the placement of characters and objects in a scene.
